I mean, on one hand I can see how her reaction/the twitter reactions may seem over the top, but on the other hand, it's pretty clear to me that she likely had dealt with the sort of harassers who
initially just compliment your appearance (which is all well and good if you're not overbearing) and then become increasingly hostile over the course of the night/try to follow you home/etc. So I imagine she's just a bit hypervigilant when it comes to unsolicited compliments on her appearance. (Because, again, it's not that it's terrible to call someone pretty-- it's just, well, if you've experienced someone stalking you/becoming progressively more overbearing and creepy after you didn't
correctly respond to their drunken compliments, you tend to automatically recoil the next time it happens since there really is no way of knowing whether that one dude will be totally well-meaning and harmless or if they're going to become aggressive. So, I don't know, to me it's understandable. I've endured assault and lots of other awful things, yet I still try to be as friendly as humanly possible, and try not to assume the worst/accept compliments as graciously as I can. But that has backfired many, many times. Plenty of seemingly ~nice guys I've encountered have flipped in an instant and gotten scary and aggressive. So, I can't really fault someone for preferring to be more closed-off even if it seems rude at times.)
