Honestly I think one of the best things people can do is to breed themselves out of the species if they have a family history of domestic abuse. My own family has issues with hitting their kids, and I've had a conversation with my mother which basically amounted to our both agreeing that our genes didn't need to continue. If the only people having kids aren't beating on one another then I'd like to think the species will only benefit.
