Honourable Mention Number 3

Sudan Archives - Sudan Archives

EPs count.

Time to bring up another genre term I hate: folktronica. It's not that I don't think that it's a valid genre, I just think it sounds stupid. Also, as electronic instruments become more ubiquitous and affordable, the genre will become more and more meaningless. Maybe stuff like this will be called trad folktranica.

Sudan Archives blends R&B, North African (probably Sudanese innit), and electronics on her self-titled EP. She's a self-taught violinist and you can really hear the organic instinct in her playing. Her songs could be a little bit more laid out as some get a bit repetitive, but what's there is still a really enjoyable and captivating listen. The tracks are catchy and full of rhythms that sometimes sound like Clap! Clap!. It's a short listen and if you're into African/Arabic music or R&B, then you should probably give it a shot.
