He could said both things in two different interviews, phrasing what he said as how he felt at the moment. It's not like they are two opposing statements. Yes, he probably did put the Tele down after receiving the Les Paul, but he could also said that he didn't need the Tele for its sound after he had the Les Paul mod cause it produced a similar single-coil sound - paraphrasing of course cause I don't have the source material in front of me at the moment like you do.
