To be perfectly honest if you gave them that option without a century of enforced education I imagine they'd all just go raise crops and work in factories to raise money for their families. The populace never made themselves smart in tens of thousands of years. The public education system didn't either, but it made a better attempt than anything else I'm aware of. It's not perfect, but at least it's put in our minds that children should learn ****.
