Lavinia Woodward: Oxford student 'too bright' for prison is spared jail for stabbing boyfriend
Quote:
An Oxford University student who a judge suggested was too bright to go to prison has been spared jail for stabbing her boyfriend in a drink and drug-fuelled attack.
Aspiring heart surgeon Lavinia Woodward, 24, knifed Thomas Fairclough in the leg with a bread knife and hurled a glass, a laptop and a jam jar at him during the violent outburst at Christ Church college.
Judge Ian Pringle QC previously said a custodial sentence may be "too severe" because it could ruin Woodward's promising medical career, after she admitted unlawfully wounding the Cambridge University student.
Although the offence would usually demand a prison term, the judge hinted he would show leniency to the "extraordinary able young lady" at a hearing in May, because her actions appeared to be "a complete one-off".
