The only reason race is even acknowledged in this instance is because there isn't some "greater handicap" in the running to cheer about.. Do you see "first black" whatever in the special Olympics? Nope, because they don't recognize race in that event. I want society to reach a point where achievements are congratulated based on the merits they represent.. Attaching anything extra to it just slows social progression.
If you want to have rewards/ceremonies for specific groups or whatever, go right ahead, but making a big to do out of a specific winner in an open field because of something other than what the award is meant to represent is not a good thing imo.

I think it is fine to recognize specific winners in an open field for the award and anything else attached to it. Maybe because you are a white male you don't see it as a big deal because you constantly see white males awarded certain things but it is still nice to see firsts happening. You don't get why it would feel nice to celebrate the first black president. The first woman president etc. It is a big deal based off of the history of those identities not being recognized in those spaces. It isn't meant to go further than that and breakdown the deep rooted segregation in the country. It is meant to recognize inclusion and the general idea of being a part of the melting pot of a nation that we are.
I have some friends that think that integration was the worst thing that happened to the black community. They are really militant and would prefer segregation.
