i think Rooney will go down as one of the more polarizing players in recent history, at least among English fans. i wholeheartedly feel that he was overrated for a large portion of his career, even as a United fan. i think he was a great captain and a great player, but he wasn't a world class star for very many years. most of his career with England really put this on display.

he was great enough to play a big role in helping a top notch team win games, but aside from a couple of his big seasons (09-10,11-12 off the top of my head) he wasn't the player putting United on his back. prior to that we had Ronny, Van Nistelrooy, Keane, etc. who, in my personal opinion, and keep in mind I wasn't a die hard viewer during these years, played a much bigger role in the success than the Roonster.

he's an icon, without a doubt. but he's nowhere near the best or the most important to put on the red and white. same thing for his career with england. reckon Harry Kane will blow his numbers out of the water.
