She didn't just "walk out like it wasn't anything". That scene (as brutal as it was) was essential. The kiss they shared once the driver knew what was about to happen, and the way the director changed the lighting and speed was brilliant. She didn't know she'd fallen in love with a complete psychopath. A psychopath who would do anything to protect her and her boy (and even her son's dad earlier in the film).
The key to that scene is after Mulligan exits the elavator in shock, the Driver turns with blood and murder lust starting to drain away, and he realizes he's lost her (and her son) forever. The look on his face says it all.
