As Frown already stated, there hasn't been a war that actually threatened our freedom in a very long time, in recent history we have mostly gone to war for power, money, etc.. not protection. It is not the United States job to police the world when we have our own problems to solve, if you feel it is we'll just have to agree to disagree.
Also, I've never seen a video of the idiots that make a scene over giving vets discounts, and if I ran a store the only people that got discounts/benefits would be repeat loyal customers (not based on their life accomplishments).

I guess WWII might qualify as a war for our freedom, if only because a world dominated by Nazi Germany and imperial Japan would probably undermine the Western democratic chokehold on world affairs and bring dictatorships to the forefront. Not that our reasoning for entering the war was altruistic or anything, but I guess you could make the case. As far as I can remember the last war truly defending our country was the War of 1812.
