Remember when CDs first came out? The vast majority of them sounded terrible. In most cases the record companies didn't have access to the master tapes, but wanted to rush and get something on the shelves to keep up with the competition.

The convenience and WOW factor was so damn cool, a lot of people weren't paying attention to the sound quality cause, like, "It's digital man!".
