New friends/job keeps him out; how do you define "odd"; could be gay, could be asexual, could be he's not in the right headspace, could be he just got out of something; yes, I agree if you talk about blowing yourself up it's a red flag; religiosity comes in goes in most people; I read about salafism pretty often - does this mean I'm at risk?
I don't mean to shoot down your suggestions. They come from a good place. But lone-wolf, or two, three man teams of radicals leave next to no footprint. You'll also get all sorts of false-positives using the heuristics you've sketched (and others have built on).
I'm not sure how to course correct for those already inculcated into the fringe death cults that plague Islam, but I do know that we can make the problem worse by banning/condemning/scapegoating Islam. It's so strange that the leaders of these radical groups are begging the West to make Islam the enemy, to ban Muslims from parts of civic life, etc. and we're, if not actually doing it, certainly discussing it like a viable solution to the problem. We are literally recruiting for them.
