As some of you may know, I am a huge Mastodon fan. They just released their new album, Emperor of Sand, last night and I have been listening to it nonstop trying to prepare for a formal review. I did want to give some initial thoughts though.
There is way more progressive influence in this album compared to the Hunter or Once More 'Round the Sun.
The edge is starting to wear off a little. Troy's vocals have taken a hit in the aggressive/roar category. However, I am pretty sure that this was intentional.
This is easiest their most melodious release to date. Brann Dailor's singing is quite the surprise as to how much it's improved. It adds a cool dynamic to the sound.
I am also pleased to say that there really is a little bit of Blood Mountain style in a couple of these tracks.
I hope you guys give it a chance. I'll post my full review in the coming days. Overall though, much better than I expected.
(More Coheed is on the way as well.)
