The year 2001 is interesting on two points:
1) The spike in anti-Islam hate crimes—more than triple the number in any other year. Even when the increased number of general hate crimes is taken into account, that's a significant blip.
2) The 9/11 attacks aren't considered to be "U.S. Hate Crimes Based on Religious Identity of Victim." You could make a good case either for or against including them.
