But you are on the right trail. Any adminstration that puts the draft in will pretty much result in the downfall of their party for the next 30-40 years.

The reason being is because if the congressional body was to approve the draft, their districts would send innumerate violent letters all but notifying that this will be the last term in office.
Well politicians don't run any more to get things done, they run to get lobbiests money. To appease the now irrate voters, they would attempt to patch the damage with an impeachment rally, remembering that impeachment doesn't mean removal, its not out of the question.
