Horrible thing to have to do man. Just take comfort that he's no longer in pain and in some way loved you for ending his pain. I've had to do this for three cats (so far) and one dog, and it never is easy. Nor should it be. I'm sure he's wagging his tail now at you from Doggy Heaven.
