Universities call it, or at least used to call it, "legit" music, which is even more pretentiously ridiculous. My theory/comp degrees were dual degrees in both "legit" and jazz. I never call it "legit." Calling it that seems embarrassing to me.

"Classical" works well enough. "There's a Classical period of classical music"--the distinction between the two uses of the terms, even without the convention of capitalizing the period but not capitalizing the overall genre, is almost always clear contextually.
