Good post.
Both Tyler and Earl. It's very hard to pinpoint what's so great about both of them. Like I'm not sure WHY they're the best rappers of this generation but I know that they are. They're both so mesmerizing. They're both so conflicting not with each other but with themselves. I know it's like a cliche to put contrasting adjectives together and say somehow these artists do both at the same time. But with both of them it's so true. Brutally disingenuous and sincere- mild mannered and obscene. There's an ocean of depth but it's not necessarily in the words. It's in the presentation almost like performance art. Lenny Bruce kind of comes to mind. I understand the revolutionary nature of NWA but I still rank Odd Future and especially Tyler and Earl's solo stuff higher. Over time, when topical relevance wanes and the music will have to stand on artistic merit alone what Tyler and Earl have done is going eclipse their peers and predecessors the same way Miles and Coltrane have done.
