Of the former members I've had the opportunity to chat with (Jimmy Carl Black, Bunk Gardner, Don Preston, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Tommy Mars, Chad Wackerman, and Arthur Barrow) every single one of them said that Zappa was indeed a very stern taskmaster but that he was also amazingly fun to work with as well and they all seemed to recall their time with him with genuine respect and fondness for the man.
