The answer is, society isn't quite as equal as we think it is. There's a lot of attitudes people just internalise and never question. Being able to "Man-mode" something and draw on that machismo is reassuring because society will turn around and say "That's how a man should be, good job".

At the very least, not entirely. Men are hardwired toward "machismo" because we evolved that way. It's not just a social construct. There's a very visceral, unconscious, primitive charge many men get from engaging in physical, even violent behavior, and I think that's more to do with how evolution has hard-wired our brains than society.
