The alternative is to install Ubuntu in a virtual machine in Windows. Oracle VirtualBox is the most popular free virtual box for Windows and it's relatively easy to install and run a Linux distro with it. You can also allocate as much or as little RAM as you want.

I kind of thought it would be something deliberate by Micro$oft in their efforts to discourage the competition, but I know sod-all about Linux so didn't want to advance that theory.
Also, bolded: blame it on the booze.
