Fed up of his status as a cub reporter for
The Daily Blah, Deadchannel (DC to his mates) contrived to get into Pixies on that fateful night, posing as a member of the catering staff, and so was the only reporter on site to be able to record the terrible events that became known as The Night of the Long Knives and Forks, and to be in a position to record Loathsome Pete's dying words ---
“It was .... Dirty ... wasn't it...?” His bravery and self-sacrifice stirred the nation, and put in motion an official inquest into the killings.
He became fast friends with the Chief Editor of
The Daily Blah, Unknown Soldier, and its wealthy, playboy owner Anteater, who between them began their own, unofficial investigation into what they (correctly) suspected was not a random massacre by a family who had ingested the designer drug Shine, but a conspiracy orchestrated by mundane Banter against their leaders. The scene in season nine's
Not With a Whimper...Part IV, where DC, US and Ant all face the terrible truth and have to choose between the safety of their city and the safety of the world, won three Emmys and numerous BAFTAs, and became one of the first ever television episodes to be nominated for an Academy Award, narrowly missing out to episode seven of season ninety-one of
The Kardashians on Meth.
DC became a sort of superhero without powers, the true, honest, reliable and dependable face of journalism, and it was his qualities that changed the focus of
The Daily Blah from a tabloid rag into a voice for truth and justice, becoming one of the most respected dailies in the city, and earning its editorial staff and owner the dubious honour of being added to the CEMB's list of banned publications, costing Anteater millions in lost revenue, a loss he shored up from his own private funds.
