It was a real case of “the wrong place at the wrong time” in season six, when Chula, busking outside the Second National Bank, was unfortunate enough to see the face of one of the bank robbers as they fled from the scene. Identified by the bank's outside CCTV, he was called in as a witness and thus began his two-season new identity in the WitPro as Robert Page III, an out-of-work guitarist running a sauna for gay men. This situation produced many of the comedy nuggets of season seven and eight, including
That's Not a Plectrum!, Steamy Stan and one of the best-loved episodes,
Guerillas in the Mist, in which Chula inadvertently hires out the sauna to an entire revolutionary army on manoeuvres!
However the story arc had to come to an end, and it did, in season six's penultimate episode,
The Levee Breaks, when Chula, faced with the prospect of his hero, Jimmy Page, (in a cameo role: he had always said he loved the original show and a chance for even a bit part in the reboot was too good to turn down) being shot by the gang in a case of mistaken identity, jumps in front of the bullet and sacrifices himself, as we all knew he would one day, for dad rock.
Rumours abounded for a year or so about a possible return, since we never actually saw Chula die, but the actor himself scotched this gossip last year, by saying “I had a blast during my time on the show, but it's time to move on, let younger blood take over. I wish all the cast and staff the very best. Keep on climbing that Stairway to Heaven!”
In a nod to his alter-ego on the show, he now signs all his emails, FB posts and tweets as “RP3”.
