Sorry for the double-post, but this news story is nightmarishly dystopian and really should be shared.
ACLU.org and
antimedia.org have both published articles about China's new social media game.
The "game" measures citizens' obedience to the Party. Run by the largest social networking and e-commerce sites in the country in cooperation with the goverment, all users' online purchases and posts add to or subtract from their score.
And once the game becomes mandatory in 2020, their score is planned to have real-world consequences like access to travel papers, loans, slower internet speeds, and employment.
Worst of all, your score is dragged down if you remain friends with low-scoring individuals. The game self-perpetuates social ostracization and obedience to authority.
