Expectations: I have a lot of time for classical, so unless it's really boring chamber music or something I can't relax and enjoy, I'd say I'm there.
1. First movement: Tempo giusto – Adagio non troppo: Obviously there's going to be a fair lot written here, as there are only technically two tracks to discuss. Lovely opening violins, reminds me of “Morning” by Grieg, then a slightly more uptempo bit gives way to violins and cellos maybe, a more rising melody, bit stronger. Now the drums are coming in and it's sounding sort of old-Hollywood-movie-about-Rome or something like that. Very powerful. I read it's something to do with a battle between the forces of good and evil, so yeah, I can hear that. I'm not going to go into every aspect of each movement, as I'd be here a lot longer than I intend to be if I did that, but this is great stuff. The
Adagio non troppo section is gorgeous and very moving. Great fusilade of percussion in the final minutes.
2. Second movement: Allego – Presto- Andante un poco tranquillo – Allegro: Starts off much more powerfully, sort of almost like those old Western movies? The
Presto part is very playful, as you would expect, violins and bassoons frolicking about with piccolos and flutes, then it gets a bit more forceful as the drums pound in, then it all slows down to some beautiful violin and viola for
Andante un poco tranquillo then there's a big stirring finish.
End result: I really like classical music, and there are few pieces I would say I don't enjoy. This was new to me, but certainly something I got a lot of enjoyment out of.
