I don`t really think it`s them that put themselves out.
The White Stripes are different to a lot of bands that have mainstream success these days.They did it by already having 4 albums out & constant touring.It wasn`t like they had one album out & suddenly MTV were all over them.
You say they were everywhere because of Elephant , I think thats down to them making a good album & being in demand which in my opinion doesn`t make them overrated.I don`t see them playing up to the usual celebrity lifestyle of appearing on tacky TV shows or mouthing off in the papers everyday.In fact the only TV shows i`ve seen Jack White in are ones where he is talking about his love of music.
If they are around less because of the last album I agree that maybe down to the album being less commercial , but I get the impression Jack White would do what he wants regardless of sales or media attention.I don`t think the last album was a reaction against the mainstream popularity , I think he would have done whatever he likes on his albums because thats always what the white stripes have done before.
