^ My tastes aren´t as purist/authentic as yours, Psy-Fi. When I´m in the mood for that type of jazz, I most often turn to this exquisite album by John Fahey:-
It was recorded in 1973, but I hope it still counts. The title track is a wonderfully controlled big-band
tour de force. Is it mournful or joyous? No matter how many times I hear it, I still can´t decide.
To me, Fahey´s album is far more than some jokey pastiche; it´s an attempt to dust off a little of the up-tempo "novelty" sound of some early jazz and to take dead serious aim at beauty instead. One of my all-time fave albums.
