I understand your dilemma. Thrash was when metal really became popular in a big sense, and is subsequently when metal started to become formulaic. If you want to really hear metal in its rawest sense, then learn to listen to early/mid eighties metal from before the "change".
Early American power metal may not be what you're looking for, but as far "rawness" goes, it was at least not what you're used to from either MTV thrash or European power metal. Cheesy it may still have been, but it was metal at its purest. Iron Maiden without the polish, basically.
