Title: Fantastic Damage
Artiste: EL-P
Genre: Hip-Hop
Familiarity: Zee-ro!
1. Fantastic damage: Interesting. Skellern's “You're a lady”, with a sped-up voice and weird deep ominous keyboard. Then some scratching maybe, and a rap. Sigh. It was going so well. He gets Green just for the cleverness of the intro. The rest I don't care for.
2. Squeegee man shooting: Yeah, nothing interesting me about this at all. Lot of repeated words, repetitive beat and rhythm. Gimme a Y. Gimme an A. Gimme a W...
3. Deep Space 9mm: Again, I'll give him props for the very clever title (feeding his inner nerd?) and I like the sort of sitar-y sound but that's about it for me.
4. Tuned mass damper: Like most hip-hop lyrics, I have no idea what this is about, which doesn't help in any sort of attempt to appreciate or give it a chance. The brassy sound is nice, but again the same phrase repeated on and on. Gets very boring. Oh, and scratching does nothing for me.
5. Dead Disnee: This is just so annoying.
6. Delorean: Oh god, this is worse!
7. Truancy: I have a feeling I may find it hard to say anything positive about this album at all. This is one of the reasons I dislike hip-hop so much. Just bores the hell out of me. Okay, the music at the end is not bad.
8. The nang, the front, the bush and the shit: What does that even mean? Sort of an ominous feel to the music. The rest is meh to horrible.
9. Accidents don't happen: Ah man, this is just torture now. Tuning out until/unless something I like happens.
Nineteen Eighty-Four dialogue is interesting. Nothing else here is.
10. Stepfather factory: Opens with a belch. Just about sums this album up really. Okay, the melody on this one is actually quite good. I'm changing this from Red to Green. Surprised at that, to say the least.
11. TOJ: That was just a mess though.
12. Dr. Hellno and the praying mantus: Nice bassline. That is all.
13. Lazerfaces' warning: Terrible. Just ... just terrible.
14. Innocent leader: This is not too bad. At least there's no rapping in it. Quite like it actually.
15. Constellation funk: This is just awful. Nothing on it I like.
16.Blood : Yeah, just really terrible. Its only redeeming feature is it brings this torture to a close.
End result: Why do people keep trying to get me into hip-hop? It's just never going to be for me. This was pure hell. I'd rather listen to the Merzbox. No, not really, but maybe. Very little I can pick out about this album that I either didn't hate or was just not interested in. My overriding feeling now is “Thank f
uck that's over!”
So, Love or Hate? Oh, let me see now: this is a hard one.... yeah. A big fat nasty
Hate for you, Mister P!
