No, I've definitely gotten the "Is this guy an alien?" look when simply talking politics, just cause I used the word "constituents". I generally don't make a habit of showing off my intelligence in real life, so when I say something "smart" around certain people, I sometimes get that look, like they thought I wasn't as smart as they were, and now they feel insecure cause they don't like that the status quo isn't what they thought it was.
People of above average intelligence are often happy to find someone they can talk with -- so long as they aren't made to look stupid by comparison, of course -- but many of average or below average intelligence have a tendency to distrust learning, since they don't have as much as they don't like to admit that they wish they had. Hell, I don't have as much as I wish I had, but I'm still relatively comfortable with my lack of stupidity.
