The Go-Betweens formed in Brisbane, and its widely-believed that this song with its mentions of travelling on the river under the bridge (Brisbane River, Story Bridge), and other - albeit vague - references, is about Brisbane.
So much does the city revere the band - and perhaps song, despite one line mentioning its 'is full of battered wives' - one of the traffic bridges that cross the Brisbane River was named after them by popular vote - The Go-Between Bridge (though, to be fair, anything sounded better than The Hale Street Link).
