Oneirology - Cunninlynguists

Track 1: IT WAS ALL A... Hugely ethereal, this beat. Very forward thinking hip-hop, psychedelic even. I love when rap can be psychedelic.

Track 2: seems a bit jazzy, okay. Beats very minimal. Also this MC, whatever his name might be, is spitting some trufe. Very dark song. Chick singing the chorus has some chops as well. So far I'm feeling this record will continue having great production.

Track 3: as if this record isn't left field so far, guitars. Guitars open this shit up. Then it sounds to me like the singer of The Shins, but I know it isn't. Songs ight

Track 4: This nigga sounds like 2pac. Not totally feeling this, at all. Lyrics are good, spits are fire but the beats obnoxious.

Track 5: This sounds super retro. Like they took a song from the 80's, chopped it around and layered this sick synth to it. Great great great song.

Track 6: This guy just admitted to enjoying smoking crack, I love it. Real personality this MC has, always something I look for.

Track 7: Don't honestly know what to say about this track. Besides the fact that it's ignorant.

Track 8: picture yourself in 1990, hip-hops in a golden era, and one producer decides to make the then sound of hip hop futuristic sounding. This is what happened. These acapella chicks during the choruses have all been great so far too.

Track 9: Smoooove fucking song. Best produced song on this album thus far. Very Beautiful reverby guitar beat.

Track 10: sticking to this future/retro aesthetic. Still forward thinking but to a fault honestly.

Track 11: This dudes lyrics about a female he loves is priceless. "I'm like Vader, I think with my saber". It's actually quite silly in hindsight.

Track 12: At this point I'm starting to think there's not enough variation throughout these songs. Their all just meshing together. Female led vocals on choruses, same spooky haunting beats. MC's still strong though, I must admit.

Track 13: I love this soft intro, much needed after very claustrophobic beats these songs prior. Then again with the same same production style. Losing interest. Each rapper in this trio are better than the last though, that's for damn sure.

Track 14: This track consists of some looney chick into some weird spiritual bullshit. It's only an epilogue.

Track 15: good closer.

Oneirology, another record I didn't expect to hear what I heard, starts off beautifully, up to the point where you realize you're basically hearing the same song over and over again. A handful of these tracks are fantastic, and a handful have half baked ideas. This trio of MC's destroy this shit tho, lyrically, linguistically, and philosophically. If it didn't have a weak 3rd act, and a slight shitty 2nd one, this would be a worthy release.

Recommendation: I guess
