Before that video came out 24 years ago, me, and I'm sure countless of millions of others, had never seen bucket drums (or anything other than traditional percussion instruments) used in that sort of setting. That song was a huge #1 hit and Carey was on the verge of mega-super-stardom. Next thing you know bucket drums were everywhere. In commercials, movies, and other videos. PVC pipe percussion followed suit via The Blue Man Group.

They've always been an instrument. Her video just gave them a bit more commercial public cred. Not that it should matter, but I'd wager Larry Wright (who became a bit of a sensation) would argue otherwise.
