I've only got the one ginger in the fam too, with most of the rest of them being pretty dark-haired, but the specter of gingervitis is still there if you look hard enough.

I think intelligence can breed prejudices as much as ignorance. It's pretty easy to develop when you combine a bit of arrogance brought on by being smarter than most of the people around you, some bitterness about being surrounded by so many idiots, and the ability to recognize patterns of behavior in groups of people, without being intellectually vapid enough to be swayed by popular notions of open-mindedness and tolerance that, while well-intentioned and legitimately important for keeping the masses from lynching and stake burning, are still often based more on emotional appeals than cold logic.
I see racism and sexism and whatnot as like myths: not necessarily based on complete bull****, but maybe just a kernel of truth. Black people being lazy is obviously nonsense, but it's easy to see where the idea came from, when they were used as unpaid labor for so long. If I was a slave, I'd take as many opportunities as possible to be a slackass too.
