I have a few recs for you Trollheart. Hope you can find the time to listen to them, curious to hear what ya think, even if you don't like em. I think they do a pretty good job of avoiding the things you dislike about rap:

I've included lyrics in the spoilers so you can follow along if you have trouble.

Spoiler for Songs:
Blackalicious - First in Flight (ft Gil Scott Heron)

Spoiler for lyrics First in Flight:
"First In Flight"
(feat. Gil Scott-Heron)

[CHORUS:]
First in flight [repeated 4X]

[Gil Scott-Heron:]
(Cause all we got is rhythm and timin'
We go beyond the edge of the sky)

FREE! Like a bird out in the wind in the night
Like a 747 to LA that's in flight
FREE! Like a garden flourishing in the wind
Like a student bout to do it when he's graduating
FREE! From any of the energy perception
Can never be defined create the definition within
FREE! Just loving life itself and never pretend to be
Anything other than the man I was meant to be
Travel through time and get a glimpse of the centuries
To come a better day is promised remember
FREE! Like my nephew in a few months about to be out the penitentiary
Meditation [repeated 9X]

[Chorus]

UH! I never hesitate about a reluctant mind
Just put the peddle to the metal see what ya find
You back there slouching over won't you pick up your spine?
Let's make it really really happen live up this time
Cause you can choose to say "Good morning God" or "Good God, morning"
With black clouds storming
I walk without umbrellas into these woods
Don't need em cause the might trees above will shelter me good
I'm eating berries from the bushes of the heavenly good
From the ?stakes/steaks? the power came to us whenever we stood
Reverberating out we're reaching each and every hood
Whenever we could the spiritual anatomy fool
But never take the credit for it B cause that'd be rude
It's just the way in life we searchin for that had to be new
You gotta work it though cause everyday ain't Saturday fool
Evolve into a better life and be happy with you and me

[Chorus]

[Gil Scott-Heron]
The first to fly
The first to strive
The first to fight to stay alive
The first to win
The first to strike
The first to live
The first in flight

RISE! Like the sun up at the crack of the dawn
Like a waking giant in the morning stretching and yawning
RISE! Like an infant being held in the light
Like the smoke from an incense when it's ignited
RISE! If you're sleeping won't you open your eyes again
The greatest high be that natural high within
No need to force the progression just ride the wind
You'll know the answer to the where and why and when
If you keep working for your search you will find the end
Though at the end you find it only begins again
See at the end you'll see it only begins again
And everything you learn you're only remembering
Cause you're

[Chorus (repeat 4X)]

It's me
Let your mind and your soul be free
Work to shine meet your goal believe
Spread that kind of L-O-V-E
Take some time off the lonely

[Gil Scott-Heron: repeat to end]
Cause all we got is rhythm and timin'
We go beyond the edge of the sky

Last Emperor - Do You Remember? (Might be to traditional for ya but it's pretty mellow)

Spoiler for lyrics Do You Remember?:
t times, I feel old like I'm going out of style
So I turn down the music on my FM dial
I beg of you to come and listen for a while
And look at this wonderful world through the eyes of a child
This is my chance to escape today
And I don't want to see my dreams chased away
Inside the palace gates is where I stay
Cause the world is no longer a safe place to play
Its like the story of the little wooden boy
Who wanted to live the life that every child should enjoy
I heard it once of twice before
The world is yours for you to explore
I heard my calling as a child and I answered it
When I grow up and finally get my chance to fit
I'll be the sort of man you can't forget
I used to stair up at the sky on my camping trips
In this quiet night of quiet stars
Of quiet chords on my guitar
Kids out there, I know it might be hard
But I realize how alive you are

CHORUS
One day I'll travel from the East to the West
And tap into the hidden strength that all men possess
I'll always be young, see a young mind is fresh
And its clear my memories will one day disappear unless
Do you remember?
Yes I remember
Do you remember?

Some say the price of life has a costly amount
When it comes to fights, I might've lost me a bout
But I've never lost my head cause that would cost me a scalp
So when my heart became cold like the Austrian Alps
I used to use my aggression, just to hurt mics
In '86 my whole crew was in to dirt bikes
Like the GT Predator or a Mongoose
Listen as I ride the rhythm and let the rhymes loose
This is what makes my life so real
I'll take my chances and spin the wheel
I can't wait to grow up so I'll know the deal
But right now I'm a child and this is how I feel
My younger days were sort of tragic despite
I learned to unify the pen and pad with the mic
I might need a little magic tonight
Cause to me imagination is the fabric of life
My rhymes helped me many times grow'n up
Before keep'n it real, all the days are blow'n up
I put on shows in my room- nobody show'n up
I'm just a little guy now, but when I'm old enough

CHORUS

That was my train of thought

Grieves - Irreversible (ft Mr Lif) (3 Dog Night sample)

Spoiler for lyrics Irreversible:
I remember being too dumb to spell it
But old enough to know
That when his fingers touched the keys
It lit something up in his soul
But at four years old
It's hard to notice the power
But I sat under that piano for hours.
Learnin' the sound of it
You heard an old mans noise
I heard every tear that he wept
And every crack in his voice.
Heard every fear that he kept
And every passion and joy
As he scrambled across the keys
And I played with my toys
I saw the power that projected from that living room
That man lost his family and everything he ever knew
He played that piano like
It saved him from the hell he flew
Runnin away from the pain that awaited
From bein' raised a Jew.

Some people paint with their music
Stimulate your senses
Enabling you to view it
But, those dogs raise
And train to take a tune with me
Everywhere I go
Makin my home where the music speaks.

(You swear you've heard it before,)
(As it slowly rambles on and on,)
(No need in bringin' em back,)
(Cause' their never really gone...)

I can still hear the music
His old box used to play
And I am what I am because of you
And they can't take that away...

I can still hear the music
His old box used to play
And the man that I am cause of you
And they can't take that away...

(Just an old fashioned love song...)

Saturday morning
Wakin up yawnin'
Smellin' moms cookin
And I can't stop lookin'
At the TV
Picture double feature.
Thugs in reverses
Ro Dan and Kane Vetra
I gotta watch.
