7. Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
6. Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
5. Hellhammer - Satanic Rites
4. Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
3. Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
2. Bathory - Blood Fire Death
1. Ulver - Bergtatt: Et eeventyr i 5 capitler
This is hard for me. Generally speaking, I dislike melodic black metal; but Dissection are a band who easily recognizable for their talent. You can play that album for people who don't like metal, and even if the vocals disagree with them, it's competence can't really be disputed. Yet, I don't really care for the album.... so it gets voted off, not for being bad, but for not being interesting.
Contrast this with, say, Ulver, who are perpetually pursuing various trends, always trying to be interesting, and always failing to come up with a coherent vision, and constantly, to my eternal annoyance, making use of crass production techniques.
Then there's Emperor and Darkthrone. I think Darkthrone are the superior band, but, this album is not my favorite of theirs (that would be PANZERFAUST!)..... and while Emperor are not my favorite band, I do think they are important, I do think they are relevant, and I do think they continually took risks. Out of all the major melodic black metal bands, Emperor strike me as the most important because of how chaotic
and unpredictable it was. Where Dissection is clinical in their musicianship, Emperor is messy, emotional, with compositions that are just so multi layered. And, as such, it pains me, but I have to vote off Darkthrone....
I vote off:
Ulver - Bergtatt: Et eeventyr i 5 capitler
Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
