It does remind me of some Hong Kong movies, but not so much John Woo as something like Johnnie To's
Election movies. Some of the mood and camerawork is also reminiscent of South Korean movies like
Oldboy or
The Man from Nowhere. And the fight choreography has that stripped down flying-elbow-to-the-face style of
The Raid: Redemption and
Ong-bak.
I just finished watching the first season a few minutes ago, by the way, and I'd definitely say it keeps up the quality all the way through.
