Been really listening to a lot of this band over the past few days, and they're becoming a new fav. I don't love everything I hear, like
Flood, but even when I don't they're too interesting for me to turn them off. And when they stoner it up (
Heavy Rocks and
Pink like a mother****er), with that heavy dose of Boris, ADD experimentalism, they're ****ing heaven.
A journal post I made about Pink pretty much sums up my feelings on that side of their sound.
Even their dronier stuff intrigues me though. I don't think I'd be able to just sit and listen to to
Flood, but I've used it to fall asleep to the last two nights, and when I have nothing to do but let my brain run away with me my mind just can't ignore what I'm hearing. The first fifteen minutes should bore the **** out of me, but they're too strange and unique for it to matter how much I'm actually enjoying what I'm listening to. I'm just waiting for what happens next.
And
Amplifier Worship is currently growing on me as well. The breaks from standard drone make those songs much more palatable, and everything inbetween is just cool. I was dubious about
Altar as well, but the first track was possibly the coolest drone metal song I've ever heard, and then to switch it into laidback indie folk (I guess) was crazy as **** in a good way.
Gotta respect the balls on this band as well. What metal/avant garde rock band in their right mind would release
New Album? It'd been cool if they'd released it a bit earlier in their career, when they were still at the very peak of their powers, but it's a pop album I'd love to sneakily slip into rotation if I ever get the chance when I'm around people bumping top forty pop songs.
I just love the fact that, besides a tendency towards stoner, they really don't have a sound. So many bands I love, even the most creative, I could survive on a desert island with one or two of their albums and be good, just cause they sound enough alike that I really wouldn't be missing out too much. If I wanted to take some Boris albums to the island, I just wouldn't know where to start. I'd take
Pink over
Flood certainly, but the thought of only having one aspect of their sound to sustain me would feel so wrong.
