Most USB interfaces (Focusrite for Mac) make home recording easy. You'll need good software. I use PC, but for Mac you can use Pro Tools, Reaper is cheap and good, Apple Logic, Audacity (freeware, but limited). You want to turn gain up as high as possible without it peaking the mic. Most interfaces glow orange or red if they're peaking.
The monitors plug into the interface. You can use good studio headphones as well (I like Vic Firths). Most interfaces have a phantom power switch for condenser mics. SM57 mics are still the standard for guitars. Just check Youtube for everything you need to know.
