Check into the soundtracks from various blaxploitation films from the 70's. Loads of great soul and funk tunes by some of the best in the business. Isaac Hayes, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Willie Hutch, Roy Ayers, Curtis Mayfield (just to name a few) much of it fits your description.
