I don't think you owe it to him to clean the whole carpet but I mean if your gonna do a job do it right. I wouldn't clean the parts I made dirty and say o well the rest is on you.

It sounds to me like you did try to clean the whole carpet though and he just wasn't happy with the job you did, in which case tell him to go spend money and do it better because you did your best. I'm a little confused by your explanation.
