The debut didn't really impress me that much at first, either. "This Charming Man" was killer, the rest seemed filler. But I tried listening to some of their other songs, and after a while I got used to Morrissey's sentimental crooning and started appreciating the lyrics. Then I guess it just clicked. Also, I'm not sure if the debut is the best starting point, especially not if you don't like post-punk.
The Queen is Dead is just very appreciable non-post-punk jangly indie pop.
The Smiths is my favourite band (were you referring to me?

), but I totally get it if you can't get into them.
