i loved watercolors back in art school, my favorite medium next to charcoal.
might seem obvious and it looks like you did but using lighter colors first is usually a must. especially if you're going for accuracy. it'll make things really pop out more. learning how to do what's called a wash if i recall correctly can be really helpful for filling out big areas. that's all i can remember right now. might be preachn to the choir, no idea what your art background is like.
