Most of the people who are spouting immortality are futurists with not much expertise when it comes to the human body. Futurists believe immortality will happen within the next twenty years, whilst on the other hand the national cancer society predicts common cancers being treated until 2050's.
If you want to be immortal I suggest getting very wealthy within the two decades.

I'm not holding my breath. Within the next hundred years I could buy, but if it comes earlier than fifty I'd be pretty surprised. Of course we were also supposed to have hover cars by the year 2000, so even conservative estimates are pretty dubious as far as I'm concerned.
