Furnace (1995)
Most of you won't have any idea who the hell this band is, but a few of you certainly do. It's quite the mind-bender, and still incredibly unique to my ears almost 20 years after its release. The group's name was much more cool in 1995 than it is now, though.
Skinny Puppy's cEvin Key and Dwayne R. Goettel (RIP) join forces with Phil Western, producer/mixer Ken "Hiwatt" Marshall, and Mark Spybey from
Dead Voices on Air to produce what sounds like a logical progression of Skinny Puppy's sound after
Last Rights - something a bit more techno with dance beats strewn about that tease you just enough to get you on the dance floor before crumbling into chaos - all while retaining SP's electro industrial, multi-textured sound. Very fresh indeed. I believe Dwayne R. Goettel once described Download's sound direction as "destroyed techno". Mark Spybey (DVOA) and Genesis P. Oridge (
Throbbing Gristle,
Psychic TV) provide otherwordly vocals and vocal samples throughout. A real f
ucking head trip! Happy to revisit it once in a while, especially with a nice set of cans on my ears.
