@BlackFrancis you remind me of how I've started to think of SOAD as sort of this band that's both hardcore alternative metal and a highly experimental grunge band, sort of like In Utero-era Nirvana plus metal, sort of.
In fact, SOAD was clearly influenced by the sound of Nirvana and by extension the Pixies. That low-high volume trademark of the Pixies that Cobain used profusely was also used extensively by SOAD, and you can hear it in songs like Shimmy, Chop Suey!, Forest and especially in Toxicity.
Come to think of it! Toxicity uses a very VERY similar song structure to Smells Like Teen Spirit. Like, it's almost exactly the same!
