The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski
Like most people, I was introduced to this series by the 2007 video game
The Witcher which was probably a mistake because 2011's
The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings completely blows it out of the water in every way imaginable. If you're a fan of
A Song of Ice and Fire's bleak and gritty medieval setting then you'll definitely enjoy whatever world this is set in, but you'll have to get use to the fact that there isn't large exposition dumps to fill the reader in on the world and politics around them. This is the story of Geralt, a monster hunter, so unless there's a monster to kill, he could really care less about the politics of the land. It was a little hard at first, because we're so conditioned to expect that exposition dump in fantasy but the individual stories (it's a collection of short stories that helps set the tone and feel of the world) really pull you in and make you forget about the world at large.
Definitely would recommend if you've just burned through ASOIF and want something else to sink your teeth into, but want something a little different.
