I know they've just brought out a new album. I assume they're alike Weezer or Jimmy Eat World in that they just lost the spark they had as they got older? Or would it genuinely be worth a look in?

You are most definitely missing out especially with their third album Louder Now. The second album has a few good tracks on it but the third album is a more solid consistent record.
I don't mind the vocalist leaving because they still have that harmonizing arrangement that they do with their songs and that's the reason why I love their vocals.
Risk listening to everything after Louder Now on your own. I can't really endorse their material after that.
