There`s nothing dangerous, you just checked). Also had a similar sensation to yours when I opened my eyes; convinced I was going to hit a lampost, then finding it was still 10 yards away.
I suspect that most of us have played race-the-pedestrian at one time or another, but your speck-of-dirt exercise is a real original - think I might try that myself sometime ...
