If it wins an Oscar it means that the Academy recognizes the work of a director who had to wait six years before the technology was invented to carry out the film. And even with that technology the film still maintained a unique look brought on by a visionary special effects team. It wasn't like Avatar where you had action scenes that was made gorgeous by pretty scenery. Shots went in and out of helmets without cutting. The opening sequence leading up to the mayhem was an unbroken 16 minute long take which included set up, purpose on why the astronauts were there, and intense action.
The story may have been weak but it is by FAR the most technically advanced film ever made and a one of a kind film. But yeah, Sandra was in her underwear once so it should fail.
